The Supreme Court of the Czech Republic seated in Brno is the highest judicial authority both in civil and criminal matters except for issues dealt with by the Constitutional Court of the Czech Republic and the Supreme Administrative Court.

What does the court decide about:

The Supreme Court decides on extraordinary appeals both in civil and criminal matters, in criminal cases also on complaints for the violation of law and on the recognition and enforcement of decisions issued by foreign courts on the territory of the Czech Republic, where this is required by a special legal regulation or an international agreement. The Supreme Court also decides other cases that are within its jurisdiction under the Rules of Civil Procedure or other legislation. Such cases concern in particular: jurisdiction distuptes; motions for removal and referral of a case; disqualification of judges from the hearing and deciding of a case; motions for determination of the court to hear and decide a case; proceedings on a motion to determine the period within which a procedural act is to be made.

How are the justices appointed:

The President and the Vice President of the Supreme Court together with the Judicial Council of the Supreme Court consider candidates for judgeship at the Supreme Court from among the judges of the lower courts and offer them to pass the internship at the Supreme Court. If the candidate fulfils the expectations during the internship, the President of the Supreme Court having consulted respective suggestion with the Judicial Council of the Supreme Court makes a proposal to the Minister of Justice, who allocates the candidate to exercise the judgeship at the Supreme Court.
